Toluca’s forward Alexis Vega erupted in celebration after scoring during the decisive second leg of the Liga MX Clausura final against América at the Nemesio Diez stadium in Toluca de Lerdo, Mexico, on May 25, 2025. This victory marked a triumphant return to glory for Toluca, ending a 15-year wait to reclaim the Mexican football crown.

The match ended 2-0 in favor of Toluca, who defeated América — a team aiming for their fourth consecutive championship. The goals came from Brazilian defender Luan Garcia in the 66th minute and Alexis Vega’s clincher at the 82nd minute, securing a 2-0 aggregate victory for the Diablos Rojos.
Antonio Mohamed, Toluca’s head coach, expressed his pride after the match: “This team truly deserved this success. Facing the three-time defending champions was incredibly tough. Now the challenge is for Toluca to get used to these high-pressure situations.”
The atmosphere inside Nemesio Diez was electrifying, with the stands drenched in scarlet red as a sea of passionate Toluca supporters proudly displayed two giant tifos. One banner boldly proclaimed “For the Glory,” showcasing the team’s current stars, while the other honored club legends Nemesio Diez Riega and his son Valentín Díez Morodo, longtime stewards of Deportivo Toluca.
From the kickoff, América controlled possession, stringing together long passing sequences, but struggled to break into the final quarter of the field. As time went on, Toluca started contesting the ball more aggressively, although their attacking rhythm was initially stifled.
Goalkeepers on both sides remained mostly spectators until América’s first real threat in the 26th minute, sparked by a slick one-two between right-back Kevin Álvarez and center-back Reyes. Reyes managed to get a shot off inside the box, only for the ball to cruelly skim the left post and drift away from goal.
Toluca earned a corner kick at the 40th minute, sparking renewed hope among fans whose chants grew louder. The resulting attack ended with Argentine midfielder Franco Romero firing a shot just wide of the left post.
Early in the second half, Portuguese striker Paulinho began to pose a serious threat inside América’s area, but the defenders successfully neutralized his close-range attempts twice.
At the 54th minute, tensions boiled over briefly with a shoving match in midfield, but no further incidents arose.
Toluca weathered América’s dominance and finally broke the deadlock with a powerful header from Luan off a corner kick, making it 1-0. The stadium erupted into a furnace of support as the home crowd rallied behind their team.
Near the 72nd minute, Paraguayan forward Robert Morales came close to doubling the lead with a header that rattled the crossbar, intensifying the pressure on the visitors.
The second goal arrived from the penalty spot after Uruguay’s Sebastián Cáceres fouled Morales in the box. Vega calmly converted the penalty low to the right, beating goalkeeper Luis Malagón and sealing Toluca’s 2-0 triumph.
This victory marked Toluca’s 11th league title, adding to their historic wins in seasons spanning from the late 1960s to the early 2010s, including notable triumphs in Verano 1998, Verano 1999, Verano 2000, and the Bicentenario 2010.
