A chilling incident unfolded inside the historic Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Alabama, during what was meant to be a joyful children’s dance recital. Two individuals were shot during the event, shaking the community to its core. According to local authorities, one suspect has since surrendered to the police.
The Mobile County District Attorney’s Office confirmed on June 2 that 27-year-old Marcus Deangelo Sanders faces charges of murder and first-degree assault. The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. on June 1 inside the iconic venue, a representative from the Mobile Police Department verified.

Initially, a caller reported that three people had been shot, but authorities later clarified that only two individuals suffered injuries. Tragically, 27-year-old Carl Williams III was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening, officials said.
Police investigations revealed that Sanders had an altercation with a man he was acquainted with inside the theater. During the confrontation, Sanders opened fire, hitting the man and a second individual in the crossfire. After the shooting, Sanders fled on foot but turned himself in to authorities shortly afterward. He was detained and booked into Metro Jail later that night.
The incident has raised serious questions about the security measures in place at the Saenger Theatre during such events. The theater had not responded to requests for comment as of June 2, leaving many wondering about the safety protocols—especially given the presence of children and families.
Mobile Police Chief William Jackson spoke candidly with local media about the security lapses that may have allowed a firearm to enter the venue. “From what I saw, the necessary precautions were not in place tonight,” he said. “I don’t know what the theater’s usual protocols are, but for an event involving children, one would assume heightened security measures would be standard.”
The Chief expressed his disbelief that such violence could erupt during a children’s recital. “Bringing a firearm into an event like this is absolutely despicable,” he added.
This tragic event has cast a long shadow over what should have been a night of celebration and community spirit. As the investigation unfolds and more details come to light, the focus remains on bringing justice to the victims and ensuring future events are safeguarded with proper security.
The courtroom awaits the upcoming trial, where the community hopes for answers and accountability for the heartbreaking violence that interrupted an innocent celebration of young dancers’ talents.
