Earlier this month, former Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton was arrested in West Virginia on charges of driving under the influence. According to court documents available online, the 57-year-old gymnastics legend was stopped in Marion County on May 17 and faced one count of driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs. She was released shortly after posting a $1,500 bond.
Retton’s name had already been in the headlines last year when her daughter shared a distressing update on social media. The 1984 Olympic all-around champion was reportedly battling a rare and severe form of pneumonia. At that time, it was revealed she was uninsured, sparking a wave of public concern and generosity. Donations poured in, raising over $450,000 to help with her medical expenses.

However, the situation also prompted questions about the specifics of Retton’s illness and the handling of the funds raised. Many wondered about the details of her condition, her insurance status, and how the donated money was being managed.
In January 2024, Retton agreed to speak candidly with NBC’s “Today Show.” She appeared on camera with an oxygen tube in her nose and recounted a harrowing ordeal: a month-long hospital stay during which doctors considered placing her on life support. Her story painted a vivid picture of a fierce battle for survival.
Her daughter, McKenna Kelley Retton, explained that affordable health care had been difficult to secure due to Mary Lou’s pre-existing medical issues. These include more than 30 orthopedic surgeries, including four hip replacements. Such extensive medical history complicated her ability to obtain insurance coverage.
Despite these challenges, Retton later told NBC she was able to secure medical insurance, offering some relief amid the health crisis. Her family also stated that any remaining funds from the donations, after covering medical bills, would be given to a charity of Mary Lou’s choice. Yet, no additional details about the distribution of the funds have surfaced since.
This turbulent period has been a stark contrast to the days when Retton was celebrated as a gymnastics icon. Now, with the recent DUI charge and her ongoing health struggles, she faces a difficult chapter in her life, navigating both legal and personal challenges. The public continues to watch closely, hoping for her recovery and clarity on her situation.
